A Study on the Normal Hemoglobin Values of University Students in Korea

Abstract
The Hemoglobin is a protein moiety in each red blood cell and its main function is the transport of large amount of oxygen in the circulation blood. A value of hemoglobin is influenced by various factors, physiologically or pathologicallly.
The measurement of hemoglobin values is an important indicator for anemia.
As few data on the normal hemoglobin value for healthy Koreans is reported, the present study was undertaken on 60 males and 40 females of healthy students, medical college, Hanyang University. The hemoglobin value was determined by cyanmethemoglobin method and Sahli Hellige method.
The mean hemoglobin values of male students was 13.3¡¾0.89 gm/100ml. with a range of 10. 5 gm/100m1. to 15.2gm/l00ml and of female students was 10.8¡¾0.95 gm/100m1. with a range of 8. 9gm/100ml. respectively.
As compared with Wintrobe, Myasaka and Other¢¥s reports, the mean values for hemoglobin content of Korean University students was relatively low in either sex.
